Alum

【Functions and Indication】Resolve toxin and kill worms, eliminate dampness and relieve itching when used externally; stanch bleeding and check diarrhea, dispel wind and eliminate phlegm when taken orally. For treatment of eczema, scab and lichen, rectocele, hemorrhoid and purulent neck/ear discharge in external application; and protracted diarrhea, bloody stool, metrorrhagia and metrostaxis, epilepsy and mania after oral administration. Calcined alum: astringe dampness and close sores, stanch bleeding and remove putridity; for treatment of eczema, damp sores, rectocele, hemorrhoid, purulent ear discharge, pudendal itch and vaginal discharge, nose and gum bleeding and nasal polyp.

【Administration and Dosage】0. 6-1. 5g. Proper amount for external use: grind it into powder and apply the powder to the affected area; or decoct it and wash the affected area with the decoction.

【Characteristics】According to the hemorrhoid theory in the Authoritative Manual of Surgery, dried medicines are needed to cure hemorrhoids once and for all. Alum has been used to develop hemorrhoid necrotizing powder. Modern pharmacological studies have suggested alum fights off staphylococcus aureus and proteusbacillus vulgaris and is effective in resisting escherichia coli and dysenteriae. The alum-water solution can allow serums to precipitate immediately, coagulate proteins, and treat bloody stool caused by internal hemorrhoids and anal fissures. Compounds consisting of alum and Picria Fel-Terrae work better with a fuming-washing therapy.
